During the brainstorming session we thought that it would be interesting to see how we could exploit the Liberty Leading the People oil painting by Eugene Delacroix. While brainstorming we came up with a headline that would completely misinterpret the piece’s original context and meaning by having the headline: “Angry Mob leaves a path of destruction as they lynch a scantily clad Quebec separatist protester.” I pushed this context further by inserting a Quebec flag over top of the original France flag, putting Le Château Frontenac in the background of the scene and painting an exaggerated scared expression on the woman’s face. I also turned one of the fighters into Alfred E. Neuman as to make it resemble the Mad Magazine further.

As a group, we discussed the idea of making the scene in a concert place with crazy fans that get cancelled. The above image is describing a concert at the highest moment. As you can see in the centre of the painting, the superstar Marianne is holding a microphone instead of the French flag, while a karaoke light bulb is shining on the top. Maniac fans are all wearing sunglasses as a symbol of the party. The guns in their hands turn into crackers, and the sword becomes a concert flag. The man on the right-hand side of Marianne is holding her ripped dress in both of his hands. The dead body is people who get too drunk and pass out on the ground, with all the empty beer bottles beside them. The guy holding stereos is playing music. The woman crawling on the ground is Marianne’s adorer, looking at her with admiration. All these aspects combined to make the painting funny and humorous.

Design #3
As a group we brainstormed the idea of having the piece’s main area of focus, be the man seemingly banging rocks with a stick found in the corner of the painting. For this, we decided to have him be the only area of colour in the original painting as well as having him be surrounded by rocks all around (maybe in place of his friends?). This helps set the scene of him being blissfully unaware of all the comotion and destruction going on behind him. We also added the iconic MAD character as one of the characters contributing to the destruction in the background.
